Al Bayt Stadium, a giant tent-like structure in Al Khor city, which will host the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2022, is a unique football venue.
The 60,000-capacity stadium combines heritage, sustainability and environment-friendly development goals, while taking into account the future societal requirements.
The stadium takes its name from bayt al sha’ar – tents historically used by nomadic peoples in Qatar and the Gulf region. The project of Al Bayt Stadium is one of the largest sport projects in the world which is designed on an area of 1.4 million square meters.
The stadium will also have a large garden of 400,000 square meters and four lakes surrounding it and walking and running tracks.
The design of Al Bayt Stadium is inspired by the traditional Arabian tent inhabited by the ancient Qataris, and known as the original Arabian tents, which is a symbol of hospitality.
The tent was built in high areas above a hill, and inhabitants start fire in front of the tent to attract guests, which was simulated when building the stadium by the surrounding lights to create a similar atmosphere.
The shade provided by the tent structure and its retractable roof system will complement the stadium’s cooling technologies, helping maintain a comfortable temperature inside without using any extra power.
