Doha: The Qatari handball national team is preparing for the first trial friendly match with Montenegro on Tuesday, January 3, in its preparations for the 28th World Men's Handball Championship to be hosted by Poland and Sweden from January 11-29, 2023.
The two teams will play in a second trail match on Thursday, January 5.
The two matches are the last ones for the Qatari team in preparations for the World Championship.
Last month, the team played two test matches in Cairo against its Egyptian counterpart. The first match ended with the victory of the Egyptian national team 21-18 while the two teams were tied in the second game 30-30.
The Qatari team also played two matches with its Tunisian counterpart last October, the first ended with a draw of 22-22, while Tunisia won the second 23-20.
The team will contend the World Championship in Group E along with the national teams of Germany, Serbia, and Algeria. They will begin their competition campaign against Germany on January 13, then play their second match against Algeria on January 15, before concluding their first-round matches against Serbia on January 17.
The top three teams in the group will qualify for the second round.
Qatar is participating in the World Championship for the 9th time in its history following its previous participation in Portugal 2003, Tunisia 2005, Germany 2007, Spain 2013, Qatar 2015, France 2017, Germany and Denmark 2019, Egypt 2021, where in 2015 Qatar finished in the second position in the Qatar edition of the same competition, as its best result in the history of its World Cup participation.
