Population in Qatar over 2.5 million by March-end

DOHA: The country’s population was over 2.5 million (2,527,000) by March-end, declining by 0.7 percent month-on-month but witnessing an yearly growth of 7.7 percent, the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics said yesterday.

In a monthly statistics report issued for February, the ministry put the population for the month at 2,545,603. This represented 9.06 percent growth year-on-year. Monthly growth in the population compared to January 2016 was 5.05 percent.
Figures for February show that the rate of divorce fell by 30.19 percent year-on year — to 74 from 106 a year earlier. Despite the rising population of people and vehicles, the death toll due to road accidents in February was 23, unchanged from a year earlier.
A total of 142,031 traffic violations were reported in February  and the number of newly registered vehicles fell on an yearly basis and month-on-month.
A total of 8,259 new vehicles were registered in the month, down 7.6 percent in a year and 5.79 percent on a monthly basis.
The number of driving licences issued in the month also fell on an annual basis and month-on-month. Some 8,633 licences were issued in February compared to 9,833 a year earlier, down 12.2 percent. The monthly decline was 6.61 percent. Arrivals through HIA rose 19.91 percent in a year to 1,408,436 and departures by 18.26 percent year-on-year to 1,323,835. Transits and transfers through the airport also rose on an annual basis.
A total of 1,931 live births were reported during the month, up 1.8 percent year-on-year. The male-female ratio was 1,021 males and 910 females. In the Qatari community, 559 births were reported and the ratio was 280 males and 279 females.The Peninsula
