DOHA: On the eve of the fifth anniversary of winning the historic FIFA World Cup bid today, Qatar has reaffirmed that FIFA 2022 World Cup will play out as an event for social change with far-reaching impact around the region. On December 2, 2010, Qatar beat bids from Australia, Korea, Japan and the United States in a landmark FIFA vote in Zurich.
“I think everybody understands the platform sports can offer towards bringing people together, building bridges, towards destroying stereotypes and wrong concepts that people may have,” Hassan Al Thawadi, CEO of the Qatar 2022, said yesterday.
“There is no bigger platform than the World Cup and five years on you see generally where we have got to,” Al Thawadi said.
“I am proud of what we have achieved in the last five years. We have achieved quite a lot,” Al Thawadi explained.
