NEW DELHI: Veteran Leander Paes teamed up with debutant Purav Raja to win the doubles and keep India afloat in the Asia-Oceania group one Davis Cup tie in New Delhi yesterday.
Paes and Raja beat South Korea’s Lim Yong-Kyu and Nam Ji-Sung 6-4, 7-6 (7/5), 6-2 to pull one back for the badly depleted home team which had lost both the opening singles on Friday.
India will, however, still need to win the two reverse singles today to qualify for the next round.
“Winning a Davis Cup tie still excites me,” said 39-year-old Paes, who made his debut in the tournament in 1990.
“And nothing better than winning in front of your home crowd. Hopefully we can turn the reverse singles our way,” he said. AFP
