69% surge in cargo handling in first quarter of 2021

Doha: The ports of Qatar have witnessed a surge of 69% in cargo handling in first quarter of 2021 compared to same period last year.

Hamad Port, Ruwais Port and Doha Port handled 411,132 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) containers; 462,570 tonnes general cargo; 105,492 livestock heads; 198,950 tonnes building materials and 19,729 units of vehicles from January to March this year. A total of 747 ships docked at these ports in three months.

“MwaniQatar achieved a remarkable increase in its performance in the 1st quarter of 2021. A total quantity of 462,570 tonnes of cargo and 411,132 containers were handled during the first quarter, a year-on-year increase of 69% and 22% respectively. #HamadPort #DohaPort #RuwiasPort,” Mwani Qatar tweeted yesterday.

Earlier, the ports of Qatar had also witnessed an increase of 22% in containers handling in March 2021 compared to same month last year. Hamad Port, Ruwais Port and Doha Port handled 137,737 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) containers; 134,320 tonnes general cargo; 25,638 livestock heads; 48,924 tonnes building materials and 6,669 units of vehicles during last month, Mwani Qatar said in an earlier tweet.

A total of 250 ships docked at these ports in March 2021. It is to be noted that despite COVID-19 pandemic Hamad Port – Qatar’s gateway to world trade – had wrapped up 2020 on a successful note.

The Hamad Port had registered an increase in vessels’ arrival and cargo handling in 2020 which indicated port’s growing importance in regional trade. Hamad Port, in 2020, handled over 1.4 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) containers and received 1,600 vessels.

According to figures, earlier released by QTerminals, terminal operating company providing services at Hamad Port, on its Twitter handle, the Port handled 1.4 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units containers; 304, 481 tonnes of bulk cargo; 1,196,559 tonnes of general cargo; 59,443 vehicles; and 264,164 heads of livestock in 2020. With every passing month and year, Hamad Port’s handling of movement of vessels and cargo is increasing and the port is expanding its container terminal base.
