DOHA: The halls of Doha College rang with sounds of French, German, Spanish and Arabic last week as the school marked international European Day of Languages.
On Wednesday 30 September, classrooms were filled with the sound of students testing out their foreign language skills in a bid to win the first school house competition points for the year.
Doha College Head of Languages Anna Davis said it was the third time the College had commemorated the day, which was an opportunity for students to learn new things about languages and the countries in which they are spoken.
“Our students are always enthusiastic about learning new languages, which makes for a great European Language Day,” Davis said.
“Our Year 7s searched for European treasure while Year 8 watched their fellow students speak an array of foreign languages,” she said.
“Year 9 enjoyed the European Football Quiz, while Year 10s and 11s listened to their teachers speak many lingos. Even the sixth formers engaged in testing their linguistic knowledge.
“We also set up a European café where the students enjoyed European and Arabic food, especially as they had to ask for it in one of the four languages taught at the College.
“The sixth form language students serving the food demanded perfect pronunciation!”
European Day of Languages is organised by the Council of Europe and the European Union each year. Its purpose is to celebrate linguistic diversity in Europe and promote language learning.
