Doha: Qatari athletes continued their fine show at the GCC Beach Games yesterday, with Qatar A team winning the gold medal after thrashing Oman B in the final at the Al Gharafa Club.
The team which displayed outstanding performance in the earlier stages of the contest continued with their superb form to outclass their Omani opponents in the final.
After a commanding show, the home team won the first half 21-17 and sealed the premier medal by winning the final session 21-18.
On the other hand, Qatar B team failed to earn a podium finish as they faced defeat against Oman A in the bronze-medal match. The visitors won the match 21-17 and 23-21.
Meanwhile, the hosts are set to clinch medal on the final day of the handball event today.
Team Qatar has been outstanding in the event winning all their matches so far.
With six points, Qatar is set to win the gold medal irrespective of the outcome of their match against Bahrain.
The Omani team is likely to clinch the silver medal ahead of Bahrain, who are yet to win a game.
Commenting on the progress of the 2nd GCC Beach Games, Director of PR for the Beach Games Organising Committee and the Qatar Olympic Committee, Mohamed Al Fadala said: “We are extremely pleased with the performance of our athletes in this incredibly competitive tournament and are honoured to host such an exciting edition of the GCC Beach Games,” said the official.
“The Games have so far been a great success and will surely inspire a new generation of athletes, locally, regionally as well as internationally.”
The excitement is set to continue as the week progresses, with sailing, open water swimming and 3x3 basketball matches set to begin today.
The GCC Beach Games, which began on April 3 and continue till the ninth, gathers more than 300 athletes from the six GCC members; Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the UAE besides hosts Qatar.THE PENINSULA
