Doha: Sale of a popular biscuit spread from Belgium, Lotus, has been stopped by the ministry following reports from Europe saying some jars contain small metal pieces.
Ministry of Public Health issued a statement saying the imported consignment of Lotus biscuit spread from Belgium, which is popular in Qatar, especially among children, is kept on hold until a proper test is done to check if it is safe to eat.
The product, which comes in 380g glass bottles with yellow lid, is being tested after the company, Lotus Bakeries, issued a recall of batches of Lotus Biscoff Crunchy Biscuit Spread.
“Lotus Bakeries is recalling batches of Lotus Biscoff Crunchy Biscuit Spread because the spread may contain small metal particles. To eliminate any risk, Lotus Bakeries urgently recommends that Lotus Biscoff Crunchy Biscuit Spread from the affected batches should not be consumed. This concerns jars of Lotus Biscoff Crunchy Biscuit Spread 380g– identifiable by the yellow lid – with various best before dates in February and March 2018 (see here).”
The distributor in Qatar, when informed about the problem, said that the batch which is having problem has not reached Qatar. The alert is for the batch with expiry date of February 19, 2018 with batch number 7019109.
As a precaution, Ministry said in its communiqué, the sale is stopped until results of the tests are out and they have sent samples from shops to the laboratory for tests.
