Zagreb: Three young children died in a fire overnight at a Roma settlement in northern Croatia, police said on Friday.

A 25-year-old woman and another child sustained minor injuries in the fire, which broke out in the attic of a house in Kursanec village near Cakovec, they said.

They and a 29-year-old man managed to escape the blaze, the cause of which was not known.

Firefighters found the bodies of the children after extinguishing the flames, police said.

HRT public television said the children were aged four, six and eight.

Croatia is home to nearly 18,000 Roma, who make up 0.46 percent of its population of 3.8 million, according to official figures.

Estimates put the actual number at 30,000 to 40,000 people.
