Geneva: The United Nations announced that two people have died and at least 186 others are missing after four boats carrying migrants capsized off the coasts of Yemen and Djibouti.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated that two of the boats capsized off the coast of Yemen on Thursday, adding that two crew members were rescued, but 181 migrants and five crew members are still missing.
It explained that two other boats capsized off the coast of Djibouti around the same time, with the bodies of two migrants recovered and all others on the boats rescued.
These incidents come after a series of previous tragic events in which a large number of illegal migrants lost their lives, highlighting the significant dangers faced by migrants relying on smuggling networks in their attempts to flee difficult conditions in their home countries. The IOM has called for enhanced support and funding to assist and protect migrants, emphasizing the urgent need to address the root causes of illegal migration, such as conflict, poverty, and climate change.
