Qatar’s Mohammad tops Laser 4.7 class of Sail Qatar 2012

Doha:  Mohammad Al Mohannadi of Qatar won top honours in the Laser 4.7 category of the Qatar international regatta - Sail Qatar 2012 – which concluded here yesterday.

Mohammad faced stiff competition from Dawood Abdull Salman of Bahrain and Abdulla Saeed Almuhairi of UAE who finished second and third, respectively.

In the Optimist section, Veronika Zivna of Czech Republic took the top spot followed by Saleh Ali Nasser Al Telfat of Qatar and Adam Bettihthamou of Qatar. 

In the Laser RDL, Adel Khaled  of UAE finished first followed by Faris Al Bakri of Qatar and Ali Bo Hamad of Kuwait. 

In the Laser STD, Qatar’s  Waleed Sharshai finished second behind Yousef Akrout of Tunisia, while another Tunisian Zine El Abidine Khairat came third.

In the 470 section, the pair of Lilly Carlisle of Great Britain and Adeel Khan of Pakistan beat off competition to finish on the top followed by the Bahraini pair of  Ebrahim Abdull Salman  and Ebrahim Duaij Al Dosseri. 

Qataris Mohammed Khalifa Al Mohannadi  and Jassim Al Kubaisi  claimed the third spot.

In Hobie–16, Zhanserik Kuanyshov and Anuar Kaldykozhayev of Kazakhstan topped with least number of penalty points followed by Qatar’s Mohamed Al Jedda and Rashid Khalifa Al Mohannadi. 

The Brazilian pair of Carlos Rocha and Gizeila Rocha took the third place.

Qatar fielded a strong contingent of 25 sailors, including four females in the event.  

The four female representatives of the hosts were Alaa Amro Yousry, Iman Samir Nimr, Gharissa Al Muftah and Maryam Al Sulaiti. In all seven female competitors competed in the championship.

Over 70 sailors from Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Qatar, UAE, India, Kazakhstan, Brazil,  Algeria, Czech Republic,  Palestine,  Iran, Tunisia and New Zealand took part in the five-day championship. The sailors were competing in the Optimist, Laser 4.7, Radial, Laser Standard, 470 and Hobie-16 classes.  The five-day event was organised by Qatar Sailing and Rowing Federation (QRSF) in cooperation with Doha Sailing Club. The QSRF is also hosting an Olympic Solidarity Course of Sailing in Doha Sailing Club which will begin today and will end on October 13.   The Peninsula
