Moscow: Qatar’s national basketball team confidently booked their place in the 16th round of the prestigious 2014 FIBA 3x3 World Championships, following a convincing 14-12 victory over Argentina in Moscow.
The basketball squad opened their campaign in the event with a shock defeat at the hands of Romania 15-17.
However, they bounced back strongly and after a tough fight they edged out Venezuela 17-16 in the second play-off before defeating Lithuania 15-11 in their third match ahead of a win over Argentina.
The team is scheduled to lock horns against Estonia in the last sixteen round.
Impressed with the national team’s performance, Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the President of Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) lauded the historic achievement to reach the last-16 round at this international basketball gathering.
“We are pleased with this achievement which came as a fruit of tangible effort began two years ago, braced the team to win two GCC titles in United Arab Emirates and Oman along with a third glorious title of Asian Championship in Doha” said the QBF President.
“We are proud of the team’s high technical level and dazzling performance and we hope they will do the best in the future,” said Sheikh Saoud.
A total of 24 nations divided into four groups, took part in the prestigious FIBA 3x3 World Championships that will conclude here today.
