Doha, Qatar: The General Cleanliness Department at the Ministry of Municipality collected about 13 tonnes of recyclable materials during Eid Al Adha due to the waste segregation programme at the source.
Under the programmes which are being implemented in phases by the General Cleanliness Department, a grey container for food waste (organic waste) and a blue container for recyclable materials have been placed at public places, schools, health centres and other places across the country.
Municipal authorities also plan to provide waste containers to all households in Qatar in the next five years, in a bid to segregate waste at source. Modern equipment and devices have been installed at recycling factories to segregate recyclable materials.
The programme aims to boost recycling practices for sustainability and a circular economy in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.
Sorting out waste at source is part of general cleanliness which brings many economic and environmental benefits such as reducing large quantities of waste going to landfill, ensuring sustainability and environment preservation goals of QNV 2030.
According to figures shared by the Ministry of Municipality on its Twitter handle, the General Cleanliness Department collected about 4,000 tonnes of waste during Eid Al Adha.
The Department collected 2,718 tonnes of solid waste, 1,1140 tonnes of household waste and 38.7 tonnes of waste from beaches. As many as 12.8 tonnes of recyclable materials were also collected from recycling trashcans at places.
The operations of the General Cleanliness Department during Eid Al Adha covered collecting solid and household waste and cleaning beaches.
The Department also run campaigns to educate people about the waste segregation programme at the source.
To maintain hygiene across the country during the festivity, cleaning teams with 789 vehicles, 1,074 drivers, 2,074 cleaning workers and 171 observers were in operation round-the-clock.
The Department also provided 74,370 waste containers enabling people to dispose the waste in the designated trashcans.
The waste sorting programme at source is in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, by reducing the amount of waste and managing the environment in a way that ensures harmony and consistency between economic and social development and environmental protection.
It also aims at preserving the integrity of the environment, preserving natural resources for future generations, and using recyclable materials that reduce the demand for raw materials, and support the private sector by providing them with recyclable materials.
The Domestic and Solid Waste Management Center in Mesaieed run by the Ministry of Municipality generated 271,378 MW of electricity through converting waste to energy in 2022. The centre, the largest facility for waste management in the Middle East, received 667,114 tonnes of waste for treatment last year.
