Doha: Indian businessman in Dubai, Balwinder Sahani, paid Dh33 million ($9million) for Dubai License Plate “D5” during an auction conducted by Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai.
The auction was held on Saturday, at the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai Hotel.
Sahani is the owner of RSG International, a property management company, with interests in the UAE, Kuwait, India and the United States.
This is the first time Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai has displayed a fancy one digit plate number. 80 unique numbers were on offer on Saturday
In 2008, an Emirati businessman Saeed Al Khouri payed Dh52.2m for Number 1 licence plate in Abu Dhabi, which so far holds the record for the costliest number plate in the UAE, Gulf news reported.
Last month in Qatar, more than QR16m have been collected in an online auction of 25 fancy car plates.
Plate number 311113 fetched the highest price which was QR2,304,000, followed by plate number 322223 which fetched QR2,010,000. Plate numbers 313131 and 322222 fetched more than QR1.5m each.
The bidding launched by The General Directorate of Traffic at the Ministry of Interior was done through Metrash 2 and continued for three days.
