El Fasher: Sudanese First Vice-President Lt Gen Bakri Hassan Saleh and Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs H E Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud on Tuesday inaugurated projects of the integrated service compound in the model village of Tabet in North Darfur, Tawila Locality, in North Darfur State as part of a Qatari initiative.
In a speech on the occasion of inauguration of services complex for voluntary repatriation of displaced people, the Deputy Prime Minister said that under the leadership of Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar was keen during the negotiations that preceded the adoption of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) and the stage that followed, to attach top priority to reconstruction and development in Darfur, pointing out that the DDPD had secured the necessary arrangements for this.
He explained that Qatar organised the International Donor Conference for Darfur in Doha from April 7 to 8, 2013.
He called on authorities concerned to provide clear plans to focus on the most urgent needs for the people of Darfur and to develop a road map to emerge from the humanitarian crises
to achieve long-term development.
Al Mahmoud noted that Qatar has implemented programmes that are designed to meet the needs and aspirations of displaced persons, refugees, ex-combatants and other groups affected by the war, in terms of their resettlement and reintegration in areas which they were displaced as well as to provide them with basic services and improve livelihoods for those who wish to return to their areas.
He said that the focus was on early recovery projects as urgent plans aimed at consolidating peace, preventing return to the cycle of violence and to assist in addressing the root causes of the conflict and encouraging reconstruction plans as well as stimulate partners to contribute to these projects.
Al Mahmoud announced that Qatar will establish 10 model villages in Darfur at a cost of
$70m.
He said that Qatar has pledged to establish projects for providing heath and educational services to nomads in Darfur at a cost of $50m.
He appreciated the efforts of the Qatari organisations that participated in implementation of projects in the voluntary repatriation villages in Darfur.
He said that Qatar dug water wells in Darfur, in cooperation with Qatar Charity Society and signed agreements with international partners to implement major water projects.
Al Mahmoud called on the people of Darfur to adhere to Doha Document for Peace in Darfur.
