DOHA: Over 1,000 cardiology experts across the globe gathered at the 14th Gulf Heart Association Conference and the 11th Gulf Vascular Society Symposium that began yesterday in the presence of Minister of Public Health H E Dr Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari. The Minister also inaugurated an exhibition being held on the sidelines of the conference at the Sheraton Grand Doha Resort and Convention Hotel.
The three-day conference is discussing advanced treatment methods in the field of cardiology. There are several sessions and workshops that will provide participants with information on comprehensive approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of common heart conditions. The exhibition showcases different local and international institutions involved in cardiac care.
During the opening session, H E Dr Hajar Ahmed Hajar Al Binali, Conference Chairman, delivered a presentation on the development of cardiac care in Qatar. He highlighted the journey from first pacemaker in-plant to opening of the Heart Hospital and its impact on reducing mortality rate in the country.
Several other experts including Dr Mary Walsh, President of the American Association of Cardiology, Dr Sidney Smith, Past-President of American Heart Association, Dr Jeroen Bax, President of European Society of Cardiology, and Dr David Wood, President of World Health Federation addressed the opening session.
Dr Amr Badr, Consultant, Cardiology, Hamad Medical Corporation and Director Of Heart Failure Clinic , speaking to media on the sidelines said that the issues that will be discussed during the conference will improve patient care.
“We have eminent experts from all over the world to discuss about the latest treatment methods and research findings in cardiac care. When we meet together, we exchange experience and share knowledge. This will definitely make a great impact on patient care,” he said.
Further, three workshops were also held yesterday by local international experts. The workshop on electrocardiography speakers discussed methods to differentiate between heart rhythm problems which causes slow heart beats, and how to identify life threatening irregularities.
Another workshop focused on various pacemakers and similar new devices used for cardiac problems. The workshop on echocardiography had presentations of case studies and advanced technology such as 3D and speckle tracking techniques.
Also a special session focused on recent updates on Atrial Fibrillation, hereditary irregular heartbeats and sudden cardiac arrest in young people and athletes.
It also discussed about effects of household electric devices and other electric equipment in hospitals and airports on heart pacemakers were discussed.
During conference parallel sessions are being held on topics such as pediatric, vascular, and pharmacology. A total of 17 scientific sessions are led by local and regional speakers from the United Kingdom, the United States, Spain, Serbia, Italy, Netherlands, Australia, France, and Turkey.
