Ajaccio, France: A freelance photographer has died after being struck by a car during the Mare è Machja automobile rally in Corsica, local prosecutor Eric Bouillard confirmed on Saturday.

The accident took place on Saturday morning, and the race was immediately stopped.

The victim, named as 49-year-old Corsican Stephane Giraudi, died instantly after being mowed down by the speeding car as it came over a bump on the road.

According to the prosecutor, the photographer was "in a place that was not authorised to the public". An enquiry has been opened.

Both the driver and his co-pilot were taken to hospital in Ajaccio in a state of shock.

Some 140 teams were taking part in the race on the Mediterranean island.
