Doha, Qatar: Monash University announced on Wednesday the successful implantation of Australia’s first BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart, marking a significant milestone in medical history.

An Australian man in his 40s, who received the titanium artificial heart at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney on November 22, 2024, has become the first patient to be discharged from the hospital with the device.

After spending several weeks in the ICU followed by close observation in the ward, he was released in early February 2025.

According to a statement from Monash University, the patient underwent a successful donor heart transplant on March 6, 2025, following 105 days with the BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart.

The man, who had been suffering from severe heart failure, volunteered to become the first Australian recipient of the device, paving the way for future advancements in artificial heart technology.
