DOHA: For a winter camping season free of traffic accidents, the General Directorate of Traffic has prepared a special plan particularly in Al Udeid and Sealine areas.

The plan is based on indicators and statistical data of the traffic situation over the past years, said Major Dr Mohammad Suleiman Al Hammadi, Head of Traffic Awareness Section at the General Directorate of Traffic.

Major Dr Mohammad Suleiman Al Hammadi

Speaking to The Peninsula, he noted that many accidents occur due to the wrong behaviour of cyclists, as well as the lack of interest in taking safety and security measures during cycling and car racing.

Al Hammadi indicated that the Department has completed its preparations to implement a comprehensive awareness plan to raise the level of safety in the camping areas during the 2021-2022 season.

The plan targets drivers participating in the events, visitors and tourists, and people in camping areas, with a focus on the youth, he explained.

Giving more details about the plan, he mentioned that it includes weekly field visits to familiarize campers with violations and dangerous traffic behaviours, urging them to follow traffic rules, in addition to preparing four-wheel vehicles equipped with the latest technologies and able to reach all regions of the country, with the aim of spreading good traffic culture and enhancing safety requirements in the camps.

The plan also includes intensifying awareness messages on social media and disseminating these messages through various media outlets, he said.

Al Hammadi added that the campaign aims primarily to protect lives and property, so the focus will be on educating the campers about the importance of using protection methods, such as safety belts, helmets, and others. This is in addition to reminding the dangers of driving at high speed and racing outside the designated areas.
