Doha: Reigning Asian champions Qatar will leave for Saudi Arabia today to take part in the 20th Asian Men’s Handball Championship which will be held in Saudi Arabia from January 18 to 31.
The Championship will also serve as qualifier for the World Championships to be held in Poland and Sweden in 2023.
The Qatar team delegation is headed by Adel Hilal Al Enezi, a member of the Board of Directors of the Qatar Football Association, and includes team manager Yousef Al Hail, administrative staff member Youssef Al Moallem and the technical staff led by Spanish coach Valero Rivera.
Qatar have been drawn in Group C along with the UAE, Iraq and Oman.
The maroons will being their campaign against Oman on Tuesday, then will play Iraq on Wednesday.
Qatar meet UAE in the third and final match of the group stage on Thursday.
The other groups include South Korea, Kuwait, Jordan and Singapore; and Saudi Arabia, Iran, Australia and India; Bahrain, Hong Kong, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
The first and second place winners from each group will qualify for the main round, where the eight qualified teams will be divided into two groups, with four teams in each group, with the first and second advancing to the semi-finals.
The top five teams in the Asian Championship will qualify for the World Championships in Poland and Sweden 2023.
Qatar had made the quarter-finals of the last World Championship in Egypt last year, fetching Asia an additional seat in the next edition.
