Meronk bounces back to take lead at Qatar Open Amateur Championship

Doha: Adrian Meronk of Poland emerged as the sole leader at the end of the second round of the Qatar Open Amateur Championship at the Doha Golf Club here yesterday.

Meronk, who was in the second spot at the end of the first day’s play, carded four-under 68 to emerge on top.

Meronk hit the top of the leaderboard with eight under 136 as 50 players made the cut.

Closely following the leader is another Polish men Mateusz Gradecki, who carded 138 and is two shots behind the leader.

Overnight leaders, Niclas Johansson of Sweden and Pavan Sagoo of England, who shared the lead at the end of the first day, slipped to the third place. Both carded four-under 140.

Mike Toorop and Mikkel Mathiesen are in the joint fourth spot, with a score of 141 of three-under.

Victor Riu, Lionel Weber, Jan Szmidt Jr, Todd Clements and Craig Lawrie are close on heels of the top three.

Craig, son of former Qatar Masters winner Paul Lawrie, who was in the third place finished the day in the tenth spot.

Last years’ runner-up Id Omar Ayoub of Morocco is in the 12th place. 

He also had two over par 74 and was locked in the 12th spot with England’s Alfie Plant, who also carded a 74 to aggregate 145 for two days. Among the Qatari players, Jaham Jassim Al Kuwari and 2017 runner-up Saleh Ali Musbah Al Kaabi are in the 21st spot along with two other players Jean-Michel Hall and Mike Elliott.

Golfers, both professional and amateur from 33 countries are taking part in the championship,  Of the 22 professional players, three with the best record in the championship will qualify for the Qatar Masters, an European tour event which take place at the Doha Golf Club in March this year. 

The winner of the championship along with three Qatari players will also get a chance to play in the Qatar Masters.
