Community College of Qatar (CCQ) has announced to open a new branch with a capacity of 1,500 students in Al Khor, in a bid to reach out to Qatari students in different localities.
“As a soft opening, registration for some courses will begin in Fall of 2017, said Ibrahim bin Saleh Al Naimi, President of CCQ, in a press conference.
“The new building in Al Khor will be the city’s first higher education building. Fall of 2017 will be Al Khor building’s first semester, but new branch will be fully functional in January 2018. It will serve the entire northern area and has a capacity for 1,500 students,” said Al Naimi. Speaking about the building of new branch, Al Naimi said “the new facility with separate buildings for Qatari students - boys and girls- will serve the north part of the country including Dakhira, Simaisima, Al Khor, Al Kaban, Al Ruwais, Umm Zaluf.
“It is a used school building and being renovated to accommodate the students. And it is expected to be completed by January 2018.” Regarding the educational programme of Al Khor branch, the president said “the new facility will provide same educational programme of CCQ and will run in two shifts- one in morning and one in evening.” “One of the purposes of CCQ is to create educational opportunities to Qatari students at their respective localities unlike other universities where students are required to go to pursue their studies.”
Speaking on the expansion plans of CCQ, Al Naimi said “the state has allotted plots of land for establishing community colleges permanently in three places- Al Mazrouha, Al Khor and Al Wakra. We are working on blue prints and designs of new facilities. The new buildings are expected to be completed within three to four years from now. Then the students will be shifted to the community colleges operating at their respective localities”, he added. “However, at present if we get any temporary facility to operate community college we will rush it and turn it to a branch of community college,” Al Naimi added. Meanwhile the Community College of Qatar launched a hotline, 16070, to reply the queries of students regarding the educational programme and courses run by CCQ. The hotline service will be available from 7am to 10pm for five working days in a week. The move aims at intensifying communications with students and those graduated from CCQ in a bid to provide them necessary support in this regard.
