Doha: Dukhan Bank, Qatar’s leading banking player, in partnership with Mowasalat (Karwa) announced the joint continuation of using an organic waste convertor that turns food waste into useful products, such as compost and organic fertiliser; a project that was started by Mowasalat (Karwa) at the beginning of 2021 and will now grow further with this cooperation.

The sustainability initiative aims to reduce the environmental footprint in the city by making use of waste that would have landed in landfills. This solution adds to a reduction in the volume of carbon dioxide emissions as it counteracts the production of methane gas in conventional waste disposal sites. The initiative falls in line with the overarching sustainability pillars of the Qatar National Vision 2030 that seek to move toward a green economy.

Speaking on the launch of the initiative, Talal Ahmed Al Khaja, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer at Dukhan Bank stated: “We are extremely pleased to join hands with Mowasalat in moving forward to develop a state-of-the-art organic waste convertor that will not only benefit the immediate community, but our nation as a whole. The patented BiobiN System has a proven track record in reducing greenhouse gas emissions while it redirects ‘waste’ to the agriculture through useful compost products. Once developed, this sustainability initiative will serve Karwa City for years to come, thus contributing towards our country’s national vision of promoting environmentally friendly practices that reduce our carbon footprint”.

The initiative directly supports the Karwa City Oasis Project that incorporates green concepts within the Mowasalat’s (Karwa) driver compound including the development of a walking and jogging track, more recreational spaces, and garden beds to grow vegetables and herbs.

Ahmed Al Muftah, CAO at Mowasalat (Karwa) said: “Over the past years we have developed a CSR strategy that is not driven as a programme, but as an integral part of our daily activities. We seek to bring together environmental and human friendliness at our workplace and beyond, and we commit ourselves to the responsibility that comes along with it. We introduced electric vehicles to reduce harmful fumes, and cut back and recycle our waste. It is great to see that we can partner up with a likeminded company on green projects like the BiobiN initiative to minimise our eco- impact and add our share to a liveable future in Qatar”.

As one of the leading banking players in the country, Dukhan Bank is committed to a widespread Corporate Social Responsibility program, that is a core element of the brand. Anchored by its mission and values, Dukhan Bank is an active player in the social, economic, and sustainable development of Qatar that puts the well-being of its people at par with banking excellence for customers and investors.
