DOHA: Visual arts will be taught in 10 secondary Independent schools in Qatar in the next academic year, says a Supreme Education Council (SEC) official.
Reema Abu Khadeja, Head, Supervision Section, SEC, said that visual arts will be taught in 10 secondary Independent schools in 2016-2017 academic year.
She said the programme will be experimental and SEC is preparing to implement it in secondary schools in the coming academic year.
The subject is taught in all elementary Independent schools and 10 middle schools through 313 specialised teachers.
The subject’s curriculum was developed in 2013 and implemented in 10 elementary Independent schools the following year.
In 2015, it was implemented in all elementary Independent schools based on good feedback from schools, according to Abu Khadeja.
She was addressing a press conference on Thursday on the occasion of the distribution of prizes to winners of the 41st children’s art exhibition held in Bahrain.
Some participants from Qatar bagged medals, which she said, reflects the excellent performance of visual art teachers.
“Our students won seven medals, including three golds, one silver and three bronzes. This is a good result,” said Souad Al Salem, Head, Visual Arts Department, Supervision Section, SEC.
Among 85 schools which competed, 25 artworks were selected after they met the standards of the competition and the winners chosen, including seven Qataris.
Al Salem said the Visual Arts Department considers this result as evidence of good outcome of teaching materials and performance.
She called upon parents to encourage and support their children to enhance their talent in visual arts.
