Giving a major boost to the health sector of the country, Sidra Medical and Research Center of Qatar Foundation, will welcome its inpatients in mid January 2018.
The ultramodern hospital will provide world-class healthcare services to children, young people and women. It is to be a beacon of learning, discovery and exceptional care, ranked among the top academic medical centers in the world, said officials yesterday. Coinciding the announcement of its first inpatients, Sidra Medical and Research Center has also changed its name to “Sidra Medicine”.
Sidra Medicine forms an integral part of the dynamic community development environment of Qatar Foundation, providing world-class patient care locally and helping to position Qatar as a leading center of excellence for healthcare globally. As a member of Qatar Foundation, and through strong partnerships with leading institutions in Qatar and around the world, Sidra Medicine helps to advance scientific discovery through investment in medical research. Initially, Sidra Medicine will receive inpatients by appointments and the hospital will launch its services in different stages between January and May 2018.
“Today’s announcement is a major milestone in the realisation of H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser’s vision to create a beacon of learning, discovery, and exceptional care, ranked among the top academic medical centers in the world,” said Peter Morris, CEO of Sidra Medicine speaking at a press conference held at the new hospital yesterday.
“We will be treating our first inpatients for women and children services in the middle of January 2018. The patients we will treat from that immediate moment will be from appointments only. The opening of Sidra Medicine will be in phases from January to May 2018 in which all services will fully opened, ” he said. Once fully operational, Sidra Medicine will become the leading pediatric hospital in Qatar. It will also be the only specialist center treating pregnant women with fetal complications.
Sidra Medicine’s research program will help develop ground-breaking treatments, technologies and techniques, especially in the areas of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Genetics and Genomics and Maternal Diabetes and Metabolic Syndromes.
Dr Abdulla Al Kaabi, Executive Chair of the Children’s Services Clinical Management Group, Executive Vice Chief Medical Officer, and Member of the Board of Governors, said, “Sidra Medicine is committed to working with our partners in Qatar’s healthcare system, including Hamad Medical Corporation, Primary Health Care Corporation, and the Ministry of Public Health, to help deliver new standards in high quality care for children, young people, and women once Sidra Medicine is fully operational.”
Sidra Medicine has been designed to provide to provide the ideal environment for tranquility, privacy and healing. The design features a main hospital building and a separate outpatient clinic and incorporates three towering atriums that serve as indoor healing gardens. This is a unique feature that every patient will be able to view from their luxurious private room, and soothing water features, as well as an impressive art collection.
Sidra Medicine has 140 clinic rooms, 10 operating theaters, 400 beds, 100 percent single rooms with a private bathroom, a birthing center and emergency department. It will employ 2,000 nurses, 600 doctors and 800 other health care professionals, as well as administrative staff.
Sidra Medicine will handle 275,000 outpatient appointments, 11,000 procedures, 100,000 emergency attendances and deliver more than 9,000 babies annually, said Morag Gates, Chief Operating Officer. Sidra Medicine’s outpatient services were launched on May 1, 2016, and now it operates 47 clinics and services related to pediatric and obstetrics care for children, and women.
Sidra Medicine’s research programme has been in operation since 2015 and aims to develop world-leading science and research programs that will align with Qatar’s national research strategy and also help address other public health issues.
