Gulf authorities are currently studying the linking of traffic violations committed in various states, so that motorists can enquire and pay the fine in their own country.
Once implemented, fines for traffic violations committed by Qatar registered vehicles in other Gulf countries will be treated as Qatar violations and be paid through Metrash2 or electronic services provided by the Ministry of Interior.
Speaking to The Peninsula, Colonel Jaber Mohamed Rashid Odaiba, Assistant Director of the Media and Traffic Awareness Department at the General Directorate of Traffic, said this project is under study.
“The Traffic Department participated last week in the 10th meeting of the working group on linking traffic violations among the GCC countries,” he said.
The meeting discussed appropriate solutions related to linking traffic violations among member States. The meeting also reviewed opinions, offers and successful experiences regarding bilateral connectivity.
In response to a question when the project will be ready, Colonel Jaber Mohamed Rashid Odaiba said that meetings are going on and it is not possible to give a date of completion now.
He also said this is not only between Saudi Arabia and Qatar but all GCC countries.
Speaking to Al Rayan TV, First Lieutenant Mohamad Rabia al Kuwari, Violations Officer at the General Directorate of Traffic, said that there is an exchange of information about traffic violations between Gulf countries. “Let us suppose that a Qatari vehicle made some traffic violation in Saudi Arabia. In less than a week a notification will come to the violator and the person can pay the fine in Doha or in Saudi Arabia if he wants,” he explained.
“A person can enquire about the details of the violation through Metrash 2 or the electronic services provided by the Ministry of Interior,” he added.
