Doha, Qatar: Many people consider public Wi-Fi as a potentially harmful internet space. One of the most serious concerns about using public Wi-Fi networks is the lack of security, which could allow hackers illegal access to personal information.
According to Qatar's National Cyber Security Agency, it is best to avoid using public Wi-Fi networks for accessing sensitive information as they are usually not secure, leaving your personal data vulnerable to theft.
To help the community navigate the online world safely, the country's cybersecurity agency recently released a series of posts on its social media platforms on the best practices to be followed when using public Wi-Fi networks. How do you protect yourself while using them?
Here are tips for securing your personal information when using public Wi-Fi networks:
Use reliable antivirus: It is necessary to activate a trusted anti-virus program. This proactive measure can help mitigate potential risks associated with connecting to public networks.
Avoid financial transactions: It is recommended to refrain from making online purchases or paying electronic bills while connected to public Wi-Fi. It is advisable to perform such transactions on safer digital connections.
Opt for Encryption: Always connect to websites with HTTPS encryption while on public Wi-Fi networks. This will safeguard data exchanged between browser and server, ensuring information remains confidential and protected from cyber threats.
Disable auto-connect: Make sure to disable auto-connect to public hotspot. This prevents your device from automatically connecting to potentially compromised networks.
Implement two-step verification: Add an extra layer of security to your accounts to reduce the risk of unauthorized access in case your password is compromised.
Regularly update software: It's vital to consistently download and install software updates as these contain patches designed to address vulnerabilities in the system and shield your device from potential threats hackers exploit on public Wi-Fi networks.
Despite their ease of use and availability in most places, public Wi-Fi networks come with a large number of risks. The National Cyber Security Agency, represented by the National Cyber Excellence Department, recently organized awareness workshops on cybersecurity risks and methods of protection from them. The aim is to create awareness on the practices and advice to be followed in the Internet world.
