Budapest: World and Olympic high jump champion Mutaz Barshim qualified for the high jump competition on Sunday in the 19th edition of World Athletics Championships 2023, currently being held in the Hungarian capital of Budapest.
He succeeded in jumping to a height of 2.28m in the semi-finals of the competition, which brought the world's best contenders in the high jump together. He will compete in the final to maintain the title next Tuesday and is determined to win the fourth gold medal globally.
Barshim won the gold medal globally in the editions of IAAF London 2017, IAAF Doha 2019, and 2022 Eugene as the first champion in the history of athletics to win the title three times.
He could break the record in the high jump of 2.45m registered under the Cuban world record holder Javier Sotomayor, as Barshim reached 2.43m, the second-highest jump in Brussels in 2014.
