Aspetar is inviting the public to join its Academic Writing Journal Club on February 23 with the theme “Getting the word out: New approaches for disseminating public health science.”

The event started on January 26, and overall has eight sessions, each being held every third Wednesday of the month. The February 23 event is the second leg of it. It will go on until November with July and August months as summer break.

The club is aimed to critically appraise publications on academic writing, apply academic writing knowledge and skills to their own writing, discuss some of the principles of high-quality academic writing and collaborate with peers on skilful academic writing.

Sofie Nelis will be the speaker for this month’s session with the topic “Advice for authors from the editors of Perspectives on Medical Education – Varpio et al (2018).”

The objectives of this discussion is to identify editorial considerations that factor into decisions to accept or reject manuscripts, and list tips on how to get your manuscript accepted.

Moreover, Aspetar said the sessions will cover a wide range of topics to improve academic writing practice, including a series of grammar pearls designed to help produce stronger memorable research manuscripts.

“The Aspetar academic writing community’s journal club, a safe online space where we learn together by presenting and discussing the peer reviewed work of experts in the field. We will spotlight the work of Prof. Lorelei Lingard and other authors who generously share their knowledge and expertise on academic writing in the open access Writer’s Craft section of the Perspectives on Medical Education Journal The writer’s craft,” it added.

The session will be from 4:15pm to 5:15pm with live sessions via Microsoft Teams.

The cost of all eight sessions is QR50, an individual should register for all session, no option for a single session.

The activity is an Accredited Group Learning Activity, Category 1 as defined by the Ministry of Public Health’s Department of Healthcare Professions Accreditation Section.

And certificates will be issued to attendees who registered and attended the live session.
