U.S Secretary of State Marco Rubio
Doha: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has lauded Qatar for its critical diplomatic role in securing the release of American captive George Glezmann from Afghanistan.
"We extend our deepest appreciation to the State of Qatar, whose steadfast commitment and diplomatic efforts were instrumental in securing George's release," Rubio stated in an official announcement by the state department.
"Qatar has consistently proven to be a reliable partner and trusted mediator, facilitating complex negotiations."
The Delta Airlines mechanic George Glezmann has been released after two and a half years in captivity in Afghanistan and is now returning to his wife, Aleksandra.
Rubio further highlighted that Glezmann's release follows the recent freedom of two other Americans, Ryan Corbett and William McKenty, who were released on President Trump's inauguration day.
The Secretary of State described Glezmann's release as "a positive and constructive step" while emphasizing that other Americans remain detained in Afghanistan.
