Doha: Team Qatar men were off to a brilliant start in the 2023 FIBA 3x3 U-23 Nations League Doha (Asia West) by emerging victorious in the first stop of the six-leg series which took place at Al Gharafa Indoor Court, yesterday.
The Qatari men’s team roster, comprising Mohammed Abbasher, Mubarak Jama, Ahmad Saeid Mohamad and Omar Mohamed Saad, yesterday defeated Saudi Arabia 21-11 and Turkmenistan 21-10 before clinching a thrilling 21-18 win over Jordan to maintain their unbeaten run at the first leg at home.
Mohammed Hashim “Hash Jr” Abbasher made the highest contribution for the hosts, scoring 27 points during yesterday’s games to top the table. Saudi Arabia’s Abdulmalik Mohammednidal Ashoor scored 24 while Turmenistan’s Yevgeniy Nazipov added 21 points for his team.
Abbasher’s compatriot Ahmad Saeid Mohamed scored 16 points, same as Turkmenistan’s Dovlet Narmyradov and Jordanians Khaled Thaher and Adham Rami Dajani.
Meanwhile, Qatar U-23 women’s team did not enjoy a great start as their male compatriots did.
Qatar women’s U-23 team, comprised of Sara Zayed Al Maadeed, Dana Elsayed, Mona Abdelmonem Elsayed and Lamis Gamal Hanafi, lost all three of their games yesterday, against Saudi Arabia (14-15) Turkmenistan (13-19) and the eventual winners of first leg, Jordan (7-18).
The remaining five stops will take place at the same venue until June 26, with a rest day set for June 23.
The four nations from “Asia-West” are vying for a spot in the final stage of the 2023 Nations League which scheduled to take place from September 13-15 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The teams will engage in six matches against each other in Doha, with the team with the highest number of points scored will emerge as the winner of the conference and secure their ticket to the final stage.
The FIBA 3x3 Nations League was established in 2017 as a developmental program specifically designed for men and women under 23 years of age. Its purpose is to enhance their skills in preparation for the open category competitions.
