Doha: Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) has been listed in the top 150 rankings for Computer Science and Engineering on this year’s Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). It makes the university first in the country and third in the Mena region.
The ranking is on the same bracket as top universities including Northwestern University, Texas A&M University (College Station), RWTH Aachen University, and Yale University.
HBKU is also among the top universities in the areas of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering. This achievement is a worldwide recognition for the university, the College of Science and Engineering (CSE) and research institutes standing in educational and research programs in these ranked subject areas.

CSE’s recognition comes during a year in which it has built on its reputation for academic excellence by recording several groundbreaking achievements, including becoming the first academic institution in the world to develop and simulate a 1.014 billion computational cell model for giant oil and gas fields.
ARWU was first published in June 2003 by the Centre for World-Class Universities, Graduate School of Education (formerly the Institute of Higher Education) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, and updated on an annual basis. Since 2009, it has been published and copyrighted by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.
It uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university.
