Doha: The World Cup may be over, but it undoubtedly left a lasting impression on both tourists and residents, who confirmed Qatar as the safest country in the world through numerous online and offline testimonials.

The country has retained its position as the ‘Safest Country’ in the world according to Numbeo Crime Index by Country 2022 out of 142 surveyed nations.

Qatar’s crime index stands at 13.78, while its safety index is 86.22.

The country has not only proved it on Numbeo, the world’s largest database of user contributed data about cities and countries worldwide, but also the people who have attended the biggest sporting event — a testament of why the country has been conferred the position for two consecutive years.

Zarmeena Khan from Pakistan told The Peninsula that her sister’s wallet was lost during the FIFA Fan Festival in Al Bidda during the second week of the World Cup. “The area was full because of the concert. We didn’t know if we can get the wallet back but still we reported it at the Lost and Found section. A few hours later, the wallet was given to staff and handed over to us with all cash and cards intact and no missing item.

“This is why I love Qatar. It has proven again and again that this country is safe.”

She also revealed that prior to World Cup, she herself forgot her phone at a coffee shop in a mall and when she came back half an hour later, it was returned.

Jaime Santiago from Mexico said he lost his wallet in a metro station while going to watch a match at Khalifa International Stadium. After reporting to the information desk, he got a call a few hours later and was asked to collect if from the Sports City stadium. “It’s unbelievable, I didn’t expect it will be returned to me because all my valuables are there, especially my cards.”

Arem Okello from Uganda said after losing her wallet in Katara, she came back and was surprised when a female security guard approached her and gave it to her. “Someone saw my wallet lying on the streets and handed to the guard. I cannot be more thankful for that.”

There haven’t been any significant security issues throughout the World Cup, either.

Speaking on Alkass TV, FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 CEO, Nasser Al Khater said the tournament did not witness security obstacles because of the security authorities’ plans.

He also added that it was a safe and family-friendly tournament that brought cultures around the world together.

Meanwhile, Qatar Tourism website under its ‘Safety in Qatar’ section noted that: “In Qatar, we pride ourselves in the worry-free travel experience that we offer, granting all visitors ranging from group travellers to solo travellers peace of mind when it comes to travelling in and around Qatar.”

It also mentioned one of the four pillars of the Qatar National Vision 2030 – Social Development which highlights the creation of a “safe, secure and stable society based on effective institutions.”

“The vision for safety is deeply embedded in the development of the country, and Qatar seeks to promote tolerance, openness, and constructive socio-cultural dialogues within the context of its Arab and Islamic roots,” Qatar Tourism explained.
