DOHA: Nominations are open for the third ORYX GTL Student Awards 2016, which recognise outstanding individuals and future thought leaders instrumental in the transformation of Qatar into a knowledge economy as per Qatar National Vision 2030.
The awards celebrate recently-graduated Master’s and PhD candidates and their dissertation advisers and highlight the importance of building postgraduate education capacity, especially for Qatar’s emerging R&D in energy-related fields.
Stakeholders and students from industry and academia are invited to nominate top individuals, along with an explanation for their choice and details on how their research supports Qatar’s goals. Nominations deadline is January 25, 2016. The Selection Committee will review the submissions on January 28 and the winners will be contacted on February 7.
An awards ceremony will be held at Qatar University (QU) on April 25.
The International Selection Review Committee for the awards will include Mohamed Al Enazi, Chief QHSE Officer, ORYX GTL; Dr Rashid Alammari, Dean, College of Engineering, QU; Dr Mounir Hamdi, Dean, College of Science, Engineering & Technology, Hamad Bin Khalifa University; Dr Hamid Parsaei, Dean, Academic Affairs & Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ); Dr Bhanu Chowdhary, Associate Vice-President, Research & Strategic Initiatives, QU; and Dr Iain Macdonald, Senior Programme Manager, Qatar Carbonates and Carbon Storage Centre, Imperial College London.
Qatar hosts more tier-one US universities than any other country in the Middle East and North Africa region, which have largely been championed by the non-profit organisation Qatar Foundation. The QF has also worked over the last two decades to develop frameworks that unlock human potential and boost the number of home-grown academics.
The winners of 2015 awards were Asma Sadia, MSc. Chemical Engineering from TAMUQ; Ibrahim Daher, PhD, Petroleum Engineering, from Imperial College London; Nabila Adam Mohamed, MSc. Environmental Engineering and Mohammed Omer Mohsen, PhD, Civil Engineering, both from QU. Previous research areas included oil and gas reservoir stimulation and management of Qatar’s hydrocarbon resources; the characterisation of multiphase flow properties, capillary pressure, residual trapping, wetting and relative permeability, for gas injection processes, CO2 storage and enhanced oil recovery.
