DOHA: The Supreme Education Council (SEC) has decided to assess all books and study material at Independent school libraries (education resource centres) to ensure they are up to date and do not contradict Islamic values and the country’s traditions.
The SEC has set up two committees to carry out the comprehensive review that will cover both the content and quality of the books, Al Sharq reported.
A supervising committee has been set up in each school with the school director as chairman, and deputy academic supervisor and those in charge of the education resource centre as members.
An assessment committee will be formed with representatives from different subject areas. Each section will assess the material related to its subjects.
The task of the first committee is to supervise the assessment process and review the reports of the assessment committee, discuss its recommendations and facilitate implementation of the proposals.
The job of the assessment committee has been identified as: to review the contents, give assessment of each subject area and prepare reports that will include recommendations with a clear vision.
The committee is supposed to focus its review on the following: To identify contents that do not suit Islamic teachings, customs, social traditions, whether they are images, text or drawings.
It is also to pinpoint content that promotes any ideology or doctrine that creates trouble and divisions in society.
The committee should also check the educational and scientific value of the contents and find out if they are outdated. Old and outdated materials can be removed. Some valuable old material that cannot be reproduced must be preserved.
The recommendations of the assessment committee should be approved by the supervising committee, copies of which should be forwarded to the supervision office and the educational resource section at SEC before March 3 next year, said the daily.
Implementation of the final proposals will be subject to approval of the educational resource centre section.
