Qatar’s Duha Al Habshi in action at the women’s vault final qualifying round as the 13th FIG Artistic Individual Apparatus World Cup kicked off yesterday.
Qatar’s Duha Al Habshi qualified for the women’s vault final at the 13th FIG Artistic Individual Apparatus World Cup here at the Aspire Dome yesterday.
The two-day qualifiers got underway with the two-day finals set to start tomorrow.
On the first day, the women’s (WAG) vault and uneven bars and men’s (MAG) Floor, Pommel Horse, Rings were held.
The competition is being held without the fans due to the Covid-19 restrictions.
Al Habshi had a cumulative score of 11.850 to finish fourth behind France’s Coline Devillard (14.033), Uzbekistan’s seven-time Olympian Oksana Chusovitina (13.566) and Egypt’s Nancy Taman (13.416).
Coline won the 2017 European title and became the first French female to win the continental title on vault.
Two years later she added silver and was part of the French team that won silver at the 2018 European Championships which was France’s best European team finish ever.
Rebeca, who accumulated 14.333, is the reigning 2021 Pan American all-around champion and she would compete at the Tokyo Games next month on a continental quota.
Meanwhile, Nariman Kurbanov of Kazakhstan topped the Pommel Horse qualifiers list followed by Marios Georgio (CYP), Iran’s Saeedreza Keikha, Kohei Kamayema (JPN), Abu Ahmad Al Soud (JOR), Matvei Petrov (ALB), Ferhat Arican (TUR) and Karimi. The 22-year-old overcame a third ACL injury and Olympic postponement last year to earn a Tokyo ticket in artistic gymnastics.
Compatriot Lorrane collected 13.400 points to finish third on the qualification table.
Zsofia Kovacs, Diana Varinska, Jana Mahmoud Anastasiia Bachynska and Zeina Ibrahim were the other qualifiers.
Doha is the eighth and final stop on the 2018-2021 FIG Apparatus World Cup series, where some of the top-ranked gymnasts will have one last chance to book their places at the Games.
Kazakhstan’s Karimi qualifies in two apparatus
Kazakhstan’s Milad Karimi was in top form to qualify for the men’s floor and pommel horse finals.
Last week, Karimi won a bronze at the 2021 Artistic Gymnastics FIG World Challenge Cup in Osijek, Croatia.
The 22-year-old, who collected 14.433 points, has already qualified for next month’s Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Karimi finished behind Artem Dolgopyat (14.900) and Rayderley Zapata (ESP).
Antonios Tantalidis (Greece), Ilyaz Azizov (KAZ), Adem Asil (TUR), Petro Pakhniuk (Ukraine) and Ahmet Onder (Turkey) are the others who made it to the finals.
Also yesterday, 2016 Olympic champion Eleftherios Petrounias was in elements to qualify for the men’s rings final.
He scored 15.133 points to raise hopes of a chance to qualify for the Tokyo Games.
The Greek star, chasing his Olympic dream here, was followed by Ibrahim Colak (Turkey), Arthur Zanetti (Brazil), Igor Radivilov (Ukraine), Caio Souza (Brazil), Mahdi Ahmad Kohani (Iran), Ali Zahran (Egypt) and Ahmet Onder of Turkey.
