SEOUL: Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki won her first title in over a year when she handed out a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Kaia Kanepi, the injury-hit Estonian who knocked her out of the French Open.

Top seed Wozniacki, whose last title had come at New Haven in August 2011, needed just 62 minutes to completely overwhelm third-seeded Kanepi, allowing her just one hold of serve in the fifth game of the match.

“Today I did well at turning defence to offence and offence to defence. That’s actually a strength of mine. I’m very pleased with how everything turned out,” said Wozniacki.

The Dane now has 19 WTA Tour titles, but she insisted that a return to the world number one spot was not on her mind.

“I don’t really think about the ranking - I’m just happy I won the tournament,” said Wozniacki, currently the world number 11.

“I want to enjoy it and be positive - so that’s what I’m thinking about right now. I want to build up for the next season and hopefully my results this week will help me move forward and get back to playing my best,” she said yesterday.

Kanepi’s run to the final was encouraging after she had to pull out of all 10 of her tournaments between the French Open and this week. AFP
