Doha, Qatar: Hosts Qatar will be targeting a hat-trick of titles at the 2024 GCC Golf Championship which tees off this weekend at the picturesque Doha Golf Club.

All the GCC countries including hosts Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and the United Arab Emirates will field their teams in the championship, featuring individual and team contests in senior and junior categories. The championship will be played from February 29 to March 3.

Qatar golfers have shown phenomenal performance in the regional event over the years, particularly in the previous two editions when they swept the individual and team gold medals in the senior category.

Talented Saleh Ali Al Kaabi, who will start as two-time defending champion in the individual category, will be a golfer to watch out for in the event.

Al Kaabi, who was also part of triumphant Qatar team last year, will be joined by Ali Abdullah Al Shahrani, Abdul Rahman Abdullah Al Shahrani and Abdulaziz Almuhanedi in the senior team event.

Each nation will be represented by four players in the senior team event while three players will compete for each side in the junior category.

The Qatar Golf Association (QGA), which hosted the inaugural edition in 1992, last staged the championship in 2016.

“We are happy to host the GCC Championship, which we consider an important event for development of golfers in the region,” QGA’s Media Coordinator Walid Saad said yesterday.

“All preparations have been finalised and we are ready to stage the event which is second big competition of the year at the Doha Golf Club after the DP World Tour leg. We are looking forward to exciting action at the weekend in good conditions, and we wish all the best to the competing teams,” he added.

The QGA will organise the Championship’s opening ceremony to be attended by the participating contingents along with QGA officials at the Doha Golf Club tomorrow.
