Doha, Qatar: Qatar delivered an outstanding participation at the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), held in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, from November 11 to 22 2024. The official delegation representing Qatar at the conference included several governmental entities, namely: the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, QatarEnergy, Qatar University, the Civil Aviation Authority, and Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa).
Assistant Undersecretary for Climate Change Affairs at MECC, Eng. Ahmed Mohammed Al Sada highlighted the efforts of Qatar’s official delegation during the conference.
He commended the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change team for their remarkable efforts in organizing Qatar’s national pavilion, which hosted various events, panel discussions, and dialogues. This participation underscored the country’s commitment to supporting international climate action and focused on advancing discussions around climate finance, transparency mechanisms, nature-based solutions, and mitigation and adaptation projects addressing climate change impacts.
The Qatari delegation emphasised the nation’s dedication to driving the necessary change to confront climate challenges in alignment with Qatar National Vision 2030 and its National Environment and Climate Strategy 2024–2030. This strategy aims to safeguard the environment, preserve natural resources, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across various sectors through innovative solutions and advanced technological applications.
The delegation reiterated Qatar’s support for global climate action efforts, stressing the importance of international cooperation in areas such as mitigation, adaptation, and the development of implementation mechanisms, including financing, technology transfer, and capacity building.
They also emphasized that Qatar’s position is rooted in the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, acknowledging disparities between developed and developing countries. The delegation called on developed nations to fulfill their responsibilities by providing financial and technological support to developing countries.
The Qatari delegation actively participated in concluding negotiations on carbon markets under Article 6, one of the priorities of COP29, achieving a historic milestone through intensive technical negotiations. They also contributed to discussions on implementing Article 6 of the Paris Agreement regarding carbon trading, the outcomes of the first Global Stocktake, the Mitigation Work Program, and the Global Goal on Climate Finance. These efforts helped bolster momentum toward achieving climate objectives.
Additionally, Qatar organised a series of side events at its pavilion during COP29, reaffirming its steadfast commitment to supporting global efforts in addressing climate change. These events tackled critical topics, including air quality, emission reduction, biodiversity conservation, water resource management, efficient land use, renewable energy projects, and supporting economic sectors such as eco-tourism and smart agriculture.
