Qatar’s Nasser Al Attiyah won the stage four of the Sonora Rally in northern Mexico yesterday, extending his lead in the general rankings.
Al Attiyah and his French co-driver Mathieu Baumel are 4:31.00 seconds ahead of Saudi Arabia’s Yazeed Al Rahji and Timo Gottschalk, with one stage to go today.
Al Attiyah is all set to take the World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC) standings lead after current leader Sebastien Loeb’s retirement on Wednesday.
The Qatari is 16 points behind Frenchman Loeb but winning the Sonora Rally would earn him 30 points, plus those scored by finishing in the top five of the stages. But to become the new leader of the provisional standings, he will have to finish the rally and avoid the pitfalls during the last stage.
