Doha: Qatar Swimming Association (QSA) has started preparations to host the 28th Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Aquatics Championships, which will be held from August 19 to 22 at Hamad Aquatics Centre.
The local organising committee yesterday held a meeting headed by Secretary General of Qatar Swimming Association Talal Al Darwish in this regard.
The board members and heads of committees working on the championship were also present to discuss the preparations and arrangements for the event.
The 28th GCC Aquatics Championships was scheduled to take place last year 2020 before the GCC Swimming organising committee decided to move the championship to this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Qatar will defend its title in the event.
The 27th GCC Aquatics Championships was held in Kuwait in 2019, where the Qatari team won first place in the age groups for the fourth time in a row after winning 34 medals, including 17 gold medals, 10 silver medals and 7 bronze medals.
QSA, a key member of FINA, has been hosting top-notch events for many years. Earlier this month, Doha played host to the FINA Congress which elected a new president of the world’s governing body.
Doha, home to annual FINA World Cup and Open Water meets, will also host the World Championship’s, world swimming’s showpiece event in 2023.
