Officials open the expo at Hamad General Hospital.

DOHA: Over 2,480 people were screened for diabetes at Women’s, Al Khor and Al Wakrah hospitals as part of events organised by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) to mark World Diabetes Day.
Among them, 32 people were referred to Primary Health Care Corporation for assessment.
Staff from the three hospitals screened patients and visitors and distributed healthy meals and education pamphlets on diabetes care and proper nutrition.
Observed on November 14, the day was introduced by International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organisation in 1991 in response to the global increase in the incidence of diabetes. The global awareness campaign aims to increase understanding of diabetes risk factors and symptoms.
“Experience tells us that those better informed and engage in learning will feel more confident, know what questions to ask and live healthier lives,” said Manal Othman, Director, Diabetes Education, HMC.
HMC hosted check-ups  across the country, education programmes at schools and workshops for healthcare professionals.
It also hosted a three-day healthy food expo, which featured cuisines, providing patients, visitors and the general public with opportunity to learn about healthier dietary options from diabetes educators and dietitians. The expo also featured height, weight and BMI consultation and blood glucose stalls.
HMC also participated in a two-day exhibition at Sealine Beach Resort in Mesaieed with Action on Diabetes.
It included screening and dietary counselling. Information sessions at local elementary and secondary schools were also held during November, teaching students, nurses and cafeteria supervisory staff how to manage diabetes in the school environment.
