Forum launched to educate people on endowment

Doha, Qatar: Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs H E Ghanem bin Shaheen bin Ghanem Al Ghanim inaugurated the first endowment forum at the premises of Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque yesterday. Held under the theme “Fixed Asset and Renewable Giving”, the forum aims to introduce the concept of endowment.

The event was attended by Director of the General Endowment Department at the Ministry, Dr. Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Ghanem Al Thani and a number of officials and guests.

The forum, along with an associated exhibition on endowment, is organised by the General Endowment Department for introducing the public to the institution of endowment and its vital role in society through the slogan: “Waqf is a community partnership”.

Over 20 entities from government sector and civil society organisations connected with endowments through community partnerships are participating in the forum.

Addressing the event, Dr. Sheikh Khalid said the progress and prosperity of the endowment in society is a measure of the progress and prosperity of societies in various fields. “What we are witnessing today is due to the grace of Allah first, then the efforts of the honourable donors and the efforts of the sincere people.”

Dr. Sheikh Khalid said the endowment in Qatar has made multiple achievements at the level of investment and endowment returns, regulations and laws regulating the endowment’s governance, electronic services and systems, community partnerships and serving various sectors of society, and at the level of endowment research and studies.

“The Department is leading in the field of endowment all over the world. We aspire to meet with our partners in success every year in the shelter of a good tree whose origin is fixed and whose giving is renewed every time,” he added.

He invited the public to attend the accompanying exhibition and its activities and learn about the endowment’s achievements. 

Among the most important achievements of the Endowment Fund for Righteousness and Piety of the department last year were the Iftar projects for the fasting people, from which 750,000 people benefited, while 500 families benefited inside Qatar from Al Adahi project.

In partnership with Hifz Al Naema Center, about 37,000 people benefited from the refrigerated car project, and the number of beneficiaries reached about 5,000 families inside Qatar.

Through the Endowment Fund for the Service of the Qur’an and Sunnah, the number of members of the Holy Qur’an teaching centres reached 30,010 students in 132 centres, and 26 centres for female students.

As many as 6,705 contestants participated in Al Muhaddith Al Saghir Competition, while 1,273 candidates participated in the Katara Award for Recitation of the Holy Qur’an.

A total of 20,199 students participated in the school competition, and other achievements. The achievements of the Endowment Fund for Mosque Service included the construction of 30 mosques and imams’ homes, while 175 others are under construction, while 21 makeshift mosques have also been established.

With regard to the Endowment Fund for Scientific and Cultural Development, the Islamweb.net recorded about 165 million visits, while the network’s websites in other languages recorded more than 71 million visits.

As many as 1,421 students at basic, university and higher education levels benefited from full educational scholarships in Qatar, in addition to educational assistance for 308,017 students. Under the Endowment Fund for Family and Child Welfare, 52 Qatari families benefited from the endowment of Sheikh Ali bin Abdullah Al Thani.

Aoun and Sanad campaign was supported with an amount of QR10m as part of the urgent relief campaign for those affected by the earthquake in Syria and Turkiye, from which 95 families benefited.

Under the Endowment Fund for Healthcare, 114 heart patients benefited, and 20,271 dialysis were performed at the expense of donors at Hamad Hospital, and other health projects in cooperation with civil society organisations such as diabetes, people with special needs, autism, and others.

Over the course of five days, the forum will hold a number of interactive activities, events and lectures, in addition to a series of accompanying seminars.
