With a sharp increase in motorcycle related road accidents in the country, the Ministry of Interior is set to form a committee to prepare a list of all the motorcyclists and delivery companies to initiate awareness programmes for them.
Colonel Mohamed Radi Al Hajri, Director of the Awareness and Information Department at the General Directorate of Traffic, has revealed that a committee is being formed to create a list of all motorbikes and delivery companies after the increase in motorcycle linked road accidents.
He also said that department is working on awareness programmes targeting motorcyclists. “We dealt with official bodies in this regard including Qatar Post because they have many motorcyclists and we had awareness cooperation for Qatar Post riders,” he said.
Speaking to Qatar Radio yesterday, Al Hajri noted that accidents increased due to a large number of motorcyclists on the roads further saying they needed awareness programmes. Al Hajri pointed out that the motorbike is considered a vehicle and motorcyclists must abide by the traffic rules, as the traffic control radars monitor their violations.
“Also motorcyclists must obtain a driving licence from the General Directorate of Traffic. The delivery companies and motorbikes in particular increased during the past year with the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic as sales transactions were being made online.
This phenomenon pushed companies compete through quick deliveries and this is something good but the problem is that it increased motorbikes accidents,” Colonel Al Hajri said.
The General Directorate of Traffic earlier announced the launch of a study to know more about the reasons behind these accidents and how to deal with the problem. Motorcycles have increased in the recent period with the coronavirus pandemic due to people relying more on delivery requests especially for food items.
Among the reasons behind these accidents also include incentive from companies or people encouraging delivery boys to reach fast. Also some boys usually indulge in speeding when they have more orders to deliver during rush hours
