The State of Qatar held a historic referendum on amendments to the constitution. Citizens actively participated in the voting process on Tuesday, responding to the call by Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. A strong voter turnout of 84 percent showed the success of the exercise. H H the Amir ratified the amendments to the Permanent Constitution of the State of Qatar yesterday, after reviewing the results of the referendum, and the constitutional amendments obtaining an approval rate of 90.6 percent of the total valid votes. High voter turnout affirmed citizens’ trust and confidence in the leadership and was a demonstration of national unity and cohesion. It enhanced popular participation in public affairs and will further strengthen national unity, and contribute effectively to the promotion of consultation, justice, and the rule of law. The General Referendum Committee and all the authorities concerned deserve praise for their impeccable arrangements and facilitations for citizens’ participation in the referendum. The General Referendum Committee had set up a total of 28 points across Qatar for people to vote. Ample arrangements were made at all the places, especially for people with special needs and the elderly. Women also actively participated in the referendum at several locations. Citizens expressed their satisfaction with the overall arrangements and smooth conduct of the referendum on constitutional amendments. They lauded the efforts by all the authorities concerned for the facilities provided to those arriving at the designated places to cast their votes. The referendum represented a distinctive model of active popular participation and a strong bond between the leadership and citizens. The active participation in the vote demonstrated a high level of national awareness of the importance of these amendments in reinforcing principles of Shura, bolstering national unity, promoting comprehensive development, and fostering economic and social stability, all of which contribute to the ongoing progress and prosperity in the state. The constitutional amendments will also enhance good governance, transparency and accountability in government work, leading to consolidating the principle of the rule of law and ensuring good performance for all state institutions in the process of progress. The referendum day showed fruits of what the forefathers planted in terms of unity, solidarity and love for the country. With this strong demonstration of national unity, cohesion, and trust in the leadership, Qatar is certain to continue its journey to further progress and prosperity as one people united under the leadership of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Al Thani.
