As Costa Rica and Qatar celebrate 20 years of diplomatic relations and 14 years since the establishment of the first Costa Rican Embassy in the region, located in Doha, the ties between the two nations continue to deepen. The visit of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to Costa Rica signifies a pivotal moment in this evolving partnership. The visit underscores Qatar’s commitment to deepening its relationship with Costa Rica, a country known for its stable democracy, strong environmental policies, and active role in international diplomacy. The visit marks a milestone with the signing of several agreements and memoranda of understanding in diverse areas such as trade, culture, sports, health, and diplomacy. The visit promotes cultural understanding and exchange, strengthening ties between the populations of both nations. The establishment of Costa Rica’s first diplomatic mission to an Arab country in Qatar in 2010 has been instrumental in advancing mutual interests and fostering trade exchanges. Since the historic visit of HH the Father Amir of Qatar, bilateral relations have expanded significantly, leading to enhanced collaboration at various international levels. Costa Rica’s hosting of the Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award (ACE Award) is another highlight of the visit. The placement of the award’s memorial in San José, in a location associated with sports and youth activities, symbolizes the promotion of positive values and the fight against crime and harmful practices. The Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani ACE Award is an annual recognition established to honour individuals, organizations, and institutions that demonstrate a commitment to combating corruption and promoting integrity worldwide. The award is a joint initiative of the State of Qatar and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Selecting the individuals eligible for the award and the countries hosting the ceremony is carried out by a dedicated UN committee through the Experts Committee and the Board of Trustees, which thoroughly review the nominees’ biographies through multiple subcommittees. Costa Rica ranks as the third-leading country in combating corruption in Latin America, making its efforts worthy of recognition and support. Hosting the 8th edition of the award is a testament to these efforts. H H the Amir’s visit reflects a shared vision for the future. With agreements spanning diplomacy, trade, and cultural exchange, Costa Rica and Qatar are poised to further their partnership, fostering development and cooperation that extend far beyond their borders. The visit symbolises a strategic partnership that goes beyond traditional diplomacy, fostering collaboration in areas that benefit both countries economically, socially, and environmentally.
