Qatar is set to host another landmark football event with the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Qatar 2024 next month, and excitement is reaching new heights for the three matches also featuring European champions Real Madrid. Renowned for hosting mega sporting events with flair, Qatar was chosen to host the tournament thanks to its proven expertise, world-class infrastructure and unmatched track record. Excitement is building for the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, similar to the buzz seen during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and the AFC Asian Cup 2023 as top teams get ready to compete for three big titles. The action begins on December 11 at the iconic Stadium 974 with the FIFA Derby of the Americas. This opening match will feature Mexico’s 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup winners, C.F. Pachuca, against the soon-to-be-crowned CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores 2024 champions. The winner of this clash will advance to face Al Ahly SC, the 2024 CAF Champions League champions, at the same venue on December 14 for the FIFA Challenger Cup. The Challenger Cup champions will then take on UEFA Champions League holders Real Madrid in the grand finale at Lusail Stadium on December 18 – the Qatar National Day – in a highly anticipated showdown for the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has declared complete readiness for the event. “Once again, Qatar is proud to host some of the world’s best clubs and football stars. Hosting the final match at Lusail Stadium on December 18 will be a remarkable way to celebrate the two-year anniversary of what is regarded as the best FIFA World Cup and its unforgettable final,” Hassan Al Kuwari, the LOC’s Marketing, Commercial & Ceremonies Executive Director recently said. Ticket sales, which opened to the public last Thursday, have received an overwhelming response. Spectators can purchase up to six tickets per person, and an official resale platform will be launched later. FIFA officials and representatives of the participating clubs also completed a week-long visit to Qatar to familiarise themselves with stadiums, training sites and accommodation facilities. FIFA Head of Youth Tournaments Roberto Grassi commended Qatar’s readiness for the competition. “Qatar boasts world-class sporting facilities for football and other sports. The nation has developed outstanding hosting capabilities, thanks to a talented pool of professionals who have worked across numerous events, including the World Cup. This legacy is alive and will shine during the FIFA Intercontinental Cup,” Grassi said. Stadium 974, known for its unforgettable World Cup matches and unique fan experience, will again host thrilling encounters. Lusail Stadium – recognised as one of the world’s finest venues – will serve as the perfect stage for the final, offering fans from around the globe a chance to create new, lifelong memories.
