Education City in Al Rayyan is a 12 square kilometer campus housing Qatar Foundation and multiple educational and research institutes. The Education City is one of the unique places in Qatar, efficiently connected by trams and walk areas for pedestrians. It houses over 8,000 students and nine universities, and 11 schools for pre-university education network. The site now houses a 219-bedroom Premier Inn Hotel, 33-hole Golf Course called Education City Golf Club, Qatar National Library, and the newly-opened Oxygen Park.
At the heart of Qatar Foundation, the Education City Stadium will host eight matches up to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. The 40,000 capacity stadium dubbed ‘Diamond in the Desert’ was designed by FIA Fenwick Iribarren Architects, situated 12km from the City Centre. It is the first Qatar 2022 stadium to receive a five-star GSAS sustainability rating ahead of its virtual inauguration in June 2020.
In February 2016, excavations uncovered rocks dating back 20-30 million years. Excavators dug 17m down, so the pitch can sit below sea level, where temperatures are cooler.
The pattern design by Fenwick Iribarren Architects has a façade that features triangles that form complex, diamond-like geometrical patterns, appearing to change colour with the sun’s movement across the sky. By night, the guise puts on a colourful light show, making it even more eye-catching.
