Doha: World No.19 Victor Ruiz and Lucas Bergamini yesterday fought back from a set down to make it past Agustin Silingo and Juan Martin Diaz Martinez in a 122-minute-long first round thriller at the Ooredoo Qatar Major 2023 yesterday.
At the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, the Spanish - Brazilian pair, seeded 10th in Qatar, outplayed the Spanish - Argentinian duo in the Round of 64 clash with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 scoreline as the main round kicked off with thrilling matches.
Also among those who made it to the next round of the first Padel Major of the year were, No. 9 seed Maximiliano Sanchez Aguero (ARG)/Lucas Campagnolo (BRA), Ramiro Moyano (ARG)/Francisco Manuel Gil Morales (ESP) and Javier Ruiz Gonzalez (ESP)/Gonzalo Rubio (ESP).
World No.17 Maximiliano and Campagnolo were tested to their limits by Marc Quilez and Toni Bueno during their two hour 30 minute-clash which ended in 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(6) in favour of the South American duo.
Campagnolo, a seasoned campaigner in the Premier Padel Tour, was exhausted after the match, the longest of the day, but credited their opponents for the fighting spirit.
“I’m really tired, Tony and Mark made a really good match. Congrats to them. It was really difficult. We were 5-4 in the third set and the only thing that we talked with our coach was that we were never going down. I think this was the key for our success and we know we will always fight. We know each other (very well).
"Tomorrow we will try to continue to improve our game and let’s see what we can do,” the 28-year-old said.

Meanwhile, the pair of Moyano/Gil reached the Round of 32 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Spaniards Ricardo Martinez and Francisco Miguel Ramirez.
Meanwhile, No.14 seed Gonzalez and Rubio defeated Qatari wildcard entrants Abdulla Al Hijji and Mohammed Saadon Al Kuwari 6-1, 6-0 in a late night match at Grandstand 4 to make it to the Round of 32.
Spain’s Ivan Ramirez and Pablo Cardona beat Qatar’s Mohammed Abdulla and Khalid Saadon Al Kuwari 6-1, 6-0 in the Round of 64 yesterday, before another Qatari wildcard pair Ali Al Saygh and Rayyan Al Jufairi lost to Francisco Guerrero and Jesus Moya (6-1, 6-2), also from Spain.
Jabor Al Mutawa and Mohammed Al Khanji also failed to impress as Spanish duo Eduardo Alonso and Juanlu Esbri blanked the Qatari pair 6-0, 6-0 to advance.
